And So it Begins...

Hi guys,

If you are reading this then you must be sick of your home country and need some adventure in your life like myself!

I am a single, 34 year old teacher from the UK and am sick of getting phone calls from 'extremely enthusiastic' recruitment consultants informing me of these 'wonderful' temporary positions that 'may' become permanent after the year if you 'prove yourself to the school' (aka I would like to put you in a crappy school, to get used and abused, only to be discarded at the end of your first year because they do not want to give you the perks of a permanent contract that you rightly deserve!).

I would love to settle down and have children soon but I feel I need to travel and work abroad before I make such big commitments and I think the time is now.

I have had a brush with a potential position with a school abroad but I decided against the opportunity because I did not feel 100% about the role.

I was offered a position at a school in Malaysia and with over 4 years teaching experience, I received the following offer of employment:

  • 10,900 RM a month which includes:
  1. 2000RM Housing Allowance
  2. 5000RM Shipping Allowance
  3. 3900RM Expat Wage

Now maybe I am being a little picky and I could have probably survived on this but I wanted to be in a much better position than in the UK and my main reasons for going abroad are:

  1. To save money
  2. For the better weather
  3. To experience a new culture and make new friends

Now, after careful consideration I decided to decline this offer (I was also a little nervous about the reports I was hearing about crime in the area and also the lack of an expat community in the town) but now I have decided to look into the UAE in particular; Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

I am aware that the wages are not as great as they were a few years ago for expats but what appeals to me about this area of the world is:

  • The safety aspect for a single woman
  • There is still money there but I think you would need to negotiate a good package
  • The weather...need I say more! lol

Well I will keep you updated on my progress and please comment if you have any advice or questions.
